Four questions to consider when choosing a floor lamp

Floor lamps can be an afterthought when designing a space. We’re here to show you how important picking the perfect floor lamp is and how fantastic the outcome can be when done so.  Designer floor lamps serve two purposes; they can be standalone gorgeous pieces of furniture, and the light they create can influence the entire mood of a room.  Here’s our guide to choosing a floor lamp for your space with four key questions to help you make the right decision.

1. Do you want your floor lamp to make a statement?
If you want people to walk in a room and say “Wow, look at that lamp!” then you should consider an eye catching floor lamp that brings height, colour and character to your space such as the Kyudo by Kundalini.
If you’d prefer something a little more subtle, which blends in with the existing decor then perhaps a more traditional floor lamp is a better option such as the Kundalini Tripod Floor.

2. What is the size and scale of the space?
When deciding on a floor lamp, you need to consider the scale of your space – particularly the height of the ceiling.
If you have a low ceiling a very tall lamp can look out of proportion. Whilst if you have a lot of overhead space, a short lamp will stand out for the wrong reasons, dazzling guests with its glare instead of filling the room with ambient light.
The solution is simple.  Determine your ideal height first and ensure the lamp you pick fits in with those scale parameters you have set.

3. What kind of light do you want?
Floor or standing lamps can be used for both task lighting and ambient lighting, so deciding which is the priority will help you to decide on the best floor lamp to go for.
If you want your lamp next to a sofa or armchair to provide reading light, then the bottom of the light source should be at around eye level when sitting.

4. How will the floor lamp work with the existing space?
Floor lamp bases can come in a range of colours, materials and styles so identifying the design theme of your existing space is crucial.  Floor lamps are also a great way to turn negative spaces into positive design features. Those ‘nothing’ areas like the gap between your sofa and wall can be lit, adding depth and character and bringing the room to life.
Good design should make life easier so make sure you choose a lamp that encourages activity and conversation, not hindering it by obstructing the line of sight between seats and people.
