5 Major benefits of LED over Halogen

One question that seems to come up time and time again here at Radiant Lighting is what is the difference between LED and Halogen? Or why is it that you recommend LEDs over Halogen globes? There are many reasons why we prefer LEDs, but it might not be something that the average person knows about, or really puts all that much thought in to. So, we wanted to put together this blog to answer any and all queries in one place about LED over Halogen.

#1 Energy Efficiency:

LEDs use approximately 80% less electricity than Halogen globes. Reducing energy consumption therefore helps cut greenhouse gas emissions that are harmful to the environment. LEDs also emit almost no heat, compared to Halogen globes that convert more than 90% of the total energy used, directly into heat! This means that only 10% of the energy powering these halogen globes are actually used for light (therefore making them immensely inefficient)

#2 LEDs are a money saver:

Following on from the first benefit, as LEDs use less energy, they will save you amass amount on your power bill. Secondly, LEDs can last up to 30 years (or up to 100,000 hours) so they will save you the inconvenience of having to regularly replace blown globes. The initial cost of an LED fitting may be a little higher than Halogen, but despite this, they still offer the best value for money in the long run.

#3 Versatility:

LEDs are available in a whole range of different colours, for any type of lighting application required. Halogen globes however only produce a white light, which really limits your possibilities.

#4 Safety:

Halogen globes are seen as a bigger safety risk than LEDs as they operate at much higher temperatures, therefore creating potential fire hazards. (Especially if they have not been installed correctly.) LEDs however, produce far less heat, so they never get hot enough to burn your fingers or ignite any materials they may come into contact with.

#5 Manufacturing:

The materials used to manufacture each bulb should also be a point to focus on when choosing your lighting. LEDs are shatterproof, shock resistant and have no brittle filaments at all, therefore making them much more durable than Halogen globes. Halogen is made up of glass, a quartz envelope and brittle filament wire, making them much more fragile and easily broken. Also posing risk if dropped on the floor and a small child or pet accidently steps on a stray shard.

In almost every scenario, LEDs will always be the better choice over halogen globes. Not only are LEDs better for the environment and better for your power bill, but they are also easier to maintain in general and will be one less thing you need to worry about for the next 30 years.
