Create your sanctuary with bedroom lighting

The bedroom simply doesn’t receive the necessary attention to lighting that it deserves.  Admittedly, of the 8+ hours we spend in our bedrooms each day, most of that time is in complete darkness.  However, it’s the time right before and after that is critical to creating the perfect mood and sanctuary.

If you keep reading this post, we will provide some inspiration and guidance to choosing the best bedroom lighting to suit your style and needs.

Bedrooms are often treated like any other room.  Four downlights in the ceiling and maybe some table lamps.  Most of the time, the downlights are not fully used because no one wants that kind of intensity of light at night (or in the morning) and you just use the lamps.  We’re not here to suggest you should skip the downlights and light your entire bedroom with table lamps but there is a middle ground that we’d like to explore and encourage.

Functional lighting

The key reasons that require light in the bedroom is usually (but not limited to) one of the following:
  1. To read or relax
  2. To navigate your wardrobe and get changed
  3. To create a mood

Reading in bed requires a small, but concentrated amount of light.  Bedside lamps can be fantastic for this purpose as they can provide a little, or a lot of light, depending on the globe you choose.  There are also specific ‘reading’ lamps that act like a small spotlight so you can read comfortably without disturbing a partner who is trying to sleep.

Depending on the size of your wardrobe and height of your ceilings, we would suggest a simple, well placed downlight in the robe.  This will generally provide all the lighting you need to safely navigate through your robe.  That’s not the most imaginative arrangement so it’s time to use your cabinetry.  Building light into cabinetry with LED strip lighting offers another layer of calming, low-level light.

Whichever mood you’re looking to set in the bedroom, wall lights and pendants can take care of the task perfectly.  They provide you with texture and sparkle through their own beauty but with the addition of a dimmer, they can set various moods.  They provide a service that is not too dissimilar to a table lamp however we are looking to layer our lighting.  Each light source adds an extra element to the room to create the perfect atmosphere.

Automation

It’s 2021 so let’s take advantage of the technology available to us.  Wireless ‘smart’ lighting systems are a simple, powerful and flexible way to control lights, with easy installation and commissioning. Smart lighting is intelligent and connected, making it easier than ever to create spaces that are more atmospheric, welcoming, productive and efficient.  Set a timer when you’d like the lights to turn on in the morning or set a nice colour to create the right atmosphere at night – it’s all possible with the smart lighting systems.
