How to choose the perfect ceiling fan

As the Perth summer continues to provide consecutive 30 degree days, we inevitably rush to the air conditioner for relief.  Whilst an air conditioner will take on most of the cooling work, ceiling fans offer a fantastic way to stay comfortable when the temperature rises.  Our Hunter Pacific ceiling fans work perfectly in tandem with your aircon to move cool air around your space, or they can be a cost-effective standalone alternative.

The article below offers some insight in to selecting the perfect fan for your space.

Size of the fan

First things first, the bigger the room, the bigger the fan required.  We measure the total diameter of the fan and for smaller rooms, you’d generally be satisfied with a fan that has a diameter of ~120cm to ~130cm.  If it’s a larger room (more than 20m2), you’d be looking at a fan with a width of at least 140cm and it could be as wide as 200cm.

Number of blades

Ceiling fans will usually have 3 or 4 blades.  There shouldn’t be a noticeable performance difference between the two options – it’s more of a personal design preference so pick the one you love!
The factors that affect the amount of air the fan can move will be dictated by the power of the motor, the fan blade pitch (angle) and the drag that is created.

Indoor/Outdoor use

If the fan will be installed indoors, then you don’t have too much to worry about here other than ensuring you pick a fan that looks great and performs well.
If the fan will be installed undercover outdoors or in a coastal area, then you’ll need to ensure the fan is ready to handle those conditions.  The Hunter Pacific Radical 2 is one such fan that is ready for Coastal/Indoor/Outdoor undercover use.
If the fan is going to be placed outside and susceptible to water contact, then you’ll need a fan that features water/weather-resistant motor housings and blades to handle the elements.

Design

Arguably, the most important factor is how your fan will look in a room. Fans can become quite a dominant feature, so make sure you spend time thinking about how the fan can complement your colour scheme and existing décor rather than clashing with it.
