The spotlight on spotlights

Sometimes the most mundane item can be the greatest opportunity for beauty. Ceiling lights have become a neglected facet to many interior designers and architects alike, where function has laid waste to design, resulting in an unspoken norm.  However, today we’re putting a ‘spotlight’ on spotlights, the proverbial shining star of ceiling lights.

Spotlights produce a strong light beam to highlight key areas of a space.  This form of lighting originated in the 1800’s where these controlled beams of light could illuminate actors and key elements of the stage.  Today though, we use spotlights in homes and commercial settings to highlight anything from artwork, furniture, goods and much more.

Spotlights are not limited to indoor spaces and they are widely used in outdoor landscapes.  You can highlight architectural elements such as columns and second stories or you can illuminate natural elements such tree canopies and ornamental plants.

How do you choose a spotlight?

As its primary function is to highlight an area or object, the first consideration for a spotlight is its brightness and colour.  There is a fine balance between too dim, where the spotlight is washed out amongst all the other light and too bright, where it sticks out like a sore thumb.  Colour is exceptionally important as it generally should match the existing temperature of all lighting.  If the space is using a cool white colour, then adding a warm white spotlight can look quite odd.

You should also look at the beam angle. Narrow angles are used for small surfaces, such as a painting on the wall. Wider angles light a larger area.  Though, the wider the angle, the less impact the spotlight will have as you begin to just flood an area with intense light.
